[‘Rabbit’s Eight
Sufferings’ - Changgeuk] - Thursday, March 20th at 7:00 pm
Duration: 142 minutes
Changgeuk is a form
of traditional Korean musical theater that evolved from pansori, a genre
of narrative singing. While pansori is performed by a single singer and a
drummer, Changgeuk incorporates multiple performers and theatrical elements,
such as acting, costumes, and sets, making it a full-fledged stage performance.
‘Rabbit’s Eight Sufferings’ adapts
the pansori Sugungga into a traditional Korean opera, focusing on the
rabbit's struggles and misfortunes, called Samjaepallan (Three Disasters
and Eight Misfortunes). It draws parallels between the rabbit's life and the
challenges of modern-day existence, delivering a message of hope and
resilience. Starring K-gugak superstars, Kim Jun-su and Yoo Tae-pyung-yang of
the National Changgeuk Company, the production features creative choreography
inspired by the movements of master dancer Gong Ok-jin, humorously depicting
the animals in Sugungga.
